  • Why he chose IEC: “I got into the electrical industry later in my career, so I liked being able to earn and gain field experience while completing my schooling right away. I also appreciate that IEC is merit-based and that I can potentially earn more, faster, based on the effort I put in.”

  • Why they chose IEC: “I wanted to be a part of something different. I wanted to show that women have an impact in a male dominated trade too.”
  • Favorite part of the program: “I love the opportunity to do something different everyday, and get to see a project through beginning to end.”
  • Future goals: “Once I card out as a journeyman, my next step is to get my signing supervisors license, then my contractors. Once I have all three, then I hope to run the business my dad has built; Powerhouse Electric.”
  • Advice for future apprentices: “Don’t be scared to take the leap. Everything is intimidating at first, and everything is hard. But the dedication and determination you put into it is what makes you successful in the end.”

  • Favorite part of the program: “My favorite part is I get to go to work as an electrician and learn on the job, then go to school in the evenings to learn exactly what I’m doing at work.”
  • Future goals: “My future goals are to become a supervisor after I become a journeyman electrician, then pass my supervisor test to be able to own my own business.”
  • Advice for future apprentices: “Everyone starts on the bottom and has to work their way up. No matter the task in front of you, do it with a smile. Eventually, you will be respected by the journeyman and given more rewarding tasks.”

  • Why they chose IEC: "The only program in Southern New Mexico that has an apprenticeship, and I wanted to learn how to be an electrician. I did research on where to start, and IEC was available—I’d say it was well worth it."
  • Favorite part of the program: "I like the labs and learning how and why things work the way they do. Learning the theory behind it, and then getting to apply those skills in the field, is really valuable."
  • Future goals: "To get my license and eventually open my own electrical company."
  • Advice for future apprentices: "You get out what you put in. With a good attitude and mindset, you’ll get the most out of the program and enjoy being there."

  • Future goals: "I would love to start an organization partnered with the Southern Baptist Convention and travel to areas devastated by natural disasters in the U.S. to help with relief efforts."
  • Advice for future apprentices: "Completing a program like the IEC will be something that nobody can take from you and will follow you and your career the rest of your life. Invest yourself in the process and see your career blossom."

Congratulations Joshua Shank!

We’re proud to celebrate Joshua Shank, a second-year apprentice at IEC Greater San Antonio and an IEC Foundation Scholarship recipient who continues to seize every opportunity.

After receiving support from the IEC Foundation, Joshua explored additional opportunities featured on our Scholarship Resource Page, which led to him earning two major awards: the Mike Rowe Works Scholarship—a prestigious award supporting individuals pursuing careers in the skilled trades—and the Home Depot Path to Pro Scholarship, which helps individuals gain the skills needed for high-demand careers.

Joshua’s initiative and dedication to his future career exemplify the mission of the IEC Foundation, and we can’t wait to see what he accomplishes next!
